Luke History of Denim by Drew Roper
A couple of weeks ago, I was blown away by
this brilliant animation at the
Find it in Wolverhampton business breakfast at the
Light House in Wolverhampton.
It was a cold morning, I’d paid £4 for parking; my stomach was awaiting a bacon bap – and then WALLOP! Luke came up showed us his animation for Luke1977 a designer menswear company. All was forgotten.
Without spoiling too much, it tells us the story of Johnny Roper, a foundry factory worker from the Black County and the history of denim. It stood out for me, because it was just so refreshing. It’s puppets, rawness, brilliant script, the emotion that was captured in just simple expressions and the humor were all top notch. You don’t see a great deal of stop-frame animation these days, which is a shame; as it has so much character. There is even some great bits of 2D animation and title sequences by Tom Langton and Richard Hallsworth.
I may be going a bit over the top, but people don’t always appreciate the hard work that creatives’ go to for their art.
Drew, scripted, directed and animated the film. Locally based, he has a studio based at the Light House in Wolverhampton and you can view more about his work over at yamination.
You can view the animation here along with a short viral (also worth a look) here.
Thanks for giving me something great to blog about, cheers Drew!

Photo of Rockspur website
We’re very pleased to be unveiling the website for Rockspur this week! We’ve loved every minute working with them and they’re as pleased as punch with their site. Another job well done!
Rockspur is a service for adults with learning difficulties that is led by its members; and you can read all about their evolution for a satellite orgnaisation to a larger independent group here.
Rockspur have achieved a brilliant amount in such a short time and we can’t wait until their black tie event next year to celebrate.

Roll up roll up, ladies and gentleman … closer … closer …
It has to be said, Fazeley Studio put on a superb design awards ceremony this Friday in Digbeth, Birmingham. For those of you that weren’t there – you missed out (It was FREE!). It was called ‘Invisible City’s Media Circus’ and, well, it certainly was a circus! The awards stem from the Invisible City; run by the Creative Project, which consisted of a handful of design projects picked out from Birmingham’s talent pool. The public then nominated their favorites over six categories and the winners were announced on the evening, along with the runner-ups. You can read all about it, and even order a book (brimmed with design goodness) at http://www.creativebirmingham.com/ for just £11.69. The site is also worth a look at for the fabulous promo videos.
As you entered it was like stepping into a twisted Monty Pythons flying circus; and everyone kept up the act all night. Interacting and entertaining you were fire jugglers, charismatic trumpeters, a mad hatter, a strong man … and that’s just on the way to the bar.
The night was guided along, by a scary looking ring master and the awards were announced in two stages with a ‘mystery’ prize that kept us hanging on until the end.
I also got to try my hand at screen printing my very own Media Circus t-shirt, thanks to InkWell who run silkscreen workshops.
A huge thank you to Fazeley Studios and those involved, in what was a brilliantly zany night.

There was a roulette table, a hot air balloon basket; and a chance to get pampered in beauty products! What more could you ask for to keep you entertained at a networking event? Well, how about nine mini seminars to whet your appetite? This was a week last Friday and I’m just about catching my breath.
For those of you that don’t know already, the Wings Business Network hold regular networking events, with its primary members being businesses women. They tailor the events to fit around its members, building solid relationships and networking opportunities. But this isn’t an females only club; men were welcome too at the events.
There were a roomful of exhibitors, ranging from beauticians to image consultants. One of the main highlights for me (sorry that I can’t mention them all) included myself walking on glass as part of Aha’s seminar called ‘Getting out of your own way’. The speakers Julie French and Tony Burgess gave an interesting talk, discussing how our own ways of thinking can actually hinder our goals in life. To find out why I decided to take off my socks and how you can achieve more in your business, why not take a look at their website?
Another of the talks, held by Carol Garrington of Passionate Media covered a brief overview of how social media plays an important role within your business. As part of the talk she showed a you tube video and some of the facts were quite remarkable. Passionate Media run more in-depth workshops on this very subject and are well worth attending!
Overall the day was really enjoyable, with plenty of talks and activities to keep people networking and building up referrals. Wings hold their events quite frequently over a wide area … so why not see what they’re all about by clicking here.
